First big snowfall of 2010

We had our first big snowfall of 2010 last night and I thought I’d share the wintry scene with you:

Foxy visitor

One of the advantages of our new back door is that we get a good view of our garden at all hours of the day.

Last night we spotted a young fox on our patio only a couple of inches from the door. The fox looked quite young and didn’t appear worried by us as we watched. I even managed to get a picture when it moved further away:

Nuts and plums

Our vegetables didn’t do that well this year but it’s been a great year for fruit and nuts.

We had a huge quantity of plums; so many in fact that I had to thin them out to try and stop the weight breaking the branches of the tree:

The hazel tree has also produced a good crop of nuts:

It’s also the first year that our greengage has produced fruit… and very tasty it was too!

And our grapevine (the mighty “Blue Gagarin”) also produced a good crop of grapes.

Another new butterfly in the garden

Whilst clearing up some of the vegetable beds this afternoon I noticed a butterfly species new to the garden. I saw a single Small Copper (Lycaena phlaeas) feeding on the flowers of the Common Fleabane (Pulicaria dysenterica) growing in the margins of the pond.

Unfortunately I didn’t manage to get a photo of the butterfly but I did take one of the Fleabane flowers:

Finished beds and steps

I’ve now finished cladding our steps and building the two new raised beds. This tidies up the area between our patio and the garden proper. I’ve just got to plant up between the steps and in the beds now.
