Cold frame fixed

A few months ago I was moving a few plants around in the cold frame, I’d opened the lid but not propped it open. Typically the wind caught the lid and slammed it down… on the back of my head. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, my head proved stronger than the perspex (acrylic glass) that I’d used on the cold frame and the lid shattered.

Over the summer the broken lid hasn’t been much of a problem but, with winter approaching, I thought it was about time I fixed it. This being the second time round I thought I’d try and do a better job of the lid.

If you believe the packaging, the perspex can be cut by scoring along it and then snapping along the joint. In my experience this didn’t work at all and left a very uneven edge. I found that the best way to cut perspex was to use the jigsaw on a very slow setting and the blade used to cut metal. This may be slow but the cut was straight and there were no cracks. I also used a silicon based sealant under the perspex to create a draft proof seal.

Now I merely need to remember to prop the lid open when I’m working…
